Using Oct4a With an Ender 3s1 and an LG V20 to serve Octoprint
Here are some notes (primarilly for me so I don’t forget) that might help someone else.
I don’t want to ruin the battery by charging it forever. I had this problem with a Google Pixel 1. It works for a while, but then the battery starts puffing up and/or won’t take a change. I found this discussion on Reddit. I played around with it for a while, and found that it indeed works if you pull the battery just after the T-Mobile pink screen pops up, with power coming in the USB cable.
The Ender 3s1 has a Schottky diode connected from the USB C port pointing toward the Ender motherboard and actually takes power from your phone. So this means you can’t run your phone for long on batteries.
Oct4a seems to install just fine. You have to sideload it, as it is not available from Google Play.
You cannot run a USB C cable from the phone to the printer and have it work. It needs a OTG connector (USB C to female USB A). I also found you could use a USB C dock with a charge port in conjunction with a laptop USB C charger.
Set the video camera resolution high. I used 1920x1080 and it is much better than the laptop using Ubuntu that I used for a while, because the phone camera is much higher quality than the built-in webcam on the laptop.
I used a phone stand that was found on Thingaverse called the Modular Mounting System. The small mount sits on the floor and points the camera on the phone nicely at the bed on the printer. Make sure to select “Turn on the flashlight when the camera is active”.
