For those of you that are using Octave on a mac you can simply download the Octave Binary from Here.
Playing with Octave
If you prefer to use a IDE of some kind, there are a number of different choices: NetBeans, and Kalculus (Which have a large gui interfaces that are similar to MatLab) and you can also use a text editor like Notepad++ and Textmate for mac.
